Overview
Cysts and lipomas are common lumps beneath the skin. They are usually harmless, but many people choose removal because of size, discomfort, repeated infection or appearance.
A plastic surgeon plans the incision to keep the scar as small and discreet as possible.
This may be relevant if…
- A soft lump under the skin that has grown or is uncomfortable
- A cyst that keeps becoming inflamed or infected
- A lump in a visible area that you would like removed
At your consultation
- Examining the lump; occasionally a scan is advised before removal
- Discussing scar placement and any medicines that affect bleeding
How it is done
Removal is usually a short procedure under local anaesthesia.
Removed tissue may be sent to a laboratory for examination to confirm what it is.
Risks, recovery & limits
- You will have a scar, planned to be as discreet as possible.
- Risks include bleeding, infection and recurrence, particularly if a cyst wall cannot be fully removed.
- An inflamed cyst may need to settle before removal.
Other options
- Monitoring a lump that is small and not causing problems
